New York Daily News

What a trip...literally. As we walked out of the enormous Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan this afternoon, after a sales training with our amazing and revered North American rep Karen Alweil for the New York International Gift Fair, we realized that one very short year ago, at this very moment we were cleaning up after our first launch party.

What a difference a year makes.

In the last year, and really in the last few short months, our little Hopscotch Kids line has come into it's own. We are so lucky to have such a great team of professionals working with us that share our passion and love of our product. It's amazing, the growing momentum that is taking place. While in New York, we have had some incredible meetings with huge national publications and online blogs. Everyone we talk to and everyone who tries our product is literally blown away by the technology and playfulness of our line. It has left us with no doubt that we have created a major buzz about Hopscotch Kids and we will be a household name in no time.

We know, for a fact, that none of this would be possible without the support and love we have been showered with from our families, friends and fans. We have worked our tails off to get to where we are, and we know that from here, the hard work really begins. We want to let you know that as always, we are dedicated to providing you the safest salon quality nail polishes for your little ones. We pride ourselves on customer service and fulfilling every order, from single bottles to birthday packs in a timely and professional manner. We are looking forward to introducing new colors and researching and producing an entire line of non-toxic cosmetics for kids.

That being said, we are hard at work tonight in New York, prepping media samples and making sure we are totally prepared for the madness that is the Gift Show. Cheers from the Big Apple, and lots of Hopscotch Love!

Happy Birthday Hopscotch Kids!!

We're turning 1 tomorrow!

It has been a wild and crazy ride thus far. We've enjoyed so many exciting changes from our fabulous Mother/Daughter Tea party (check out our beautiful party pics from one year ago
here), a fantastic and groundbreaking new formula, a trip to the Oscars gifting suites, a trip to Santa Monica for Eco Baby World, then back to Los Angeles where we picked up a US rep and publicist--how very Hollywood, baby.

And now, as I write this, Ginny is on her way to NYC for a whirlwind media tour and the International Gift Show. Oh, and I'm sure you've heard by now that we are getting ready to launch our absolutely gorgeous, eco-chic adult line, Scotch.

We have a lot to celebrate on our first birthday and we want you to celebrate with us... After all, we couldn't have done it without you!!

Please use promo code ANN20 to receive 20% off your next order.

Many thanks from all of us at Hopscotch Kids. We're looking forward to another amazing year.

Great Review from Natural Mommie!

A BIG thank you to Natural Mommie for the spectacular review! We love you too!!

I’m always happy to feature
Raspberry Kids on Natural Mommie. This online lifestyle store is Canadian, full of the newest products for babies and kids and just a happy little place to shop on the net. It’s a bright, cheery and inviting webstore much like owner, Sue Sinclair! Her refreshing approach to shopping for safe and fun children’s products is contagious – take a look at the site, twitter and facebook page and you’ll know what I mean!

A new product in stock at Raspberry Kids is an item that’s making noise all over the web. It’s eco-friendly SALON QUALITY nail polish called Hopscotch Kids!

These nail polishes are truly non-toxic and safe for children. They are water-based nail polishes that are produced without toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde, acetone, or heavy metals. There are no noxious fumes or odors and no yellowing or drying of nails! Salon quality means that mommies can wear them too!

Along with this gorgeous collection of brightly pigmented nail polishes is non-toxic polish remover. It’s all natural, corn based and is formulated with Aloe and Vitamin E conditioners.

My experience? Well since I don’t have little princesses in the house {though I do have a few handsome princes haha}, I tried the polishes out on myself! The Bubble Gum in a Dish is sooo pretty. It’s a sort of a raspberry/fuchsia/hot pink color. Incredibly shiny, dimensional and quick drying – it’s definitely salon quality. It dries perfectly even without any lines from the brush {I can’t think of the proper word for this – estheticians, help me out!} and the color is consistent. Even though it’s called the Water Color collection, the polish isn’t watery or too thin. How pretty is this?? {Please ignore my hangnails and dry cuticles, I’m in desperate need of a manicure}

With safe polishes like this on the market, I’m surprised that the toxic ones are even an option. At $12.99 a bottle, they’re more than the brand I normally reach for at $8.99, but in the end, what’s $4 extra when the bottle is going to last me over a year and I don’t have to inhale noxious fumes to have nails this pretty for my date with hubby tonight!

Mommies of little girls, you’ll love this polish and the huge array of colors you can pick from. Check out the collection

The case for non-toxic nails….but, what does it all mean?

As most of you know, or have heard, or read about recently there is increasing concern over the toxicity of our cosmetics in this country. A landmark bill was introduced in Congress last week dealing with this very issue. As a whole, the FDA is very lax about what chemicals are allowed in our beauty products. Chemicals that have been known to cause all types of cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities, reproductive issues and more.

Nail Polish – Traditional vs. “Big 3 Free”

Traditional nail polishes are one of the most toxic cosmetic products you can buy, and most people are not even aware that these toxins are absorbed as quickly into your nail bed as they are into your skin. Not to mention the toxins your are breathing into your lungs. Traditional nail polishes include nasty ingredients like Formaldehyde, Toluene and Dibutyl Phthalate otherwise known as “The Big Three”. Removers and hardeners associated with acrylic nails and shellac treatments contain an even longer, harder to pronounce list of damaging ingredients.

Many nail polish manufacturers have agreed to be “Big 3 Free” and tout themselves as "non-toxic" or “safe.” Is it true? The fact of the matter is NO - they are neither safe nor non-toxic. You can be “Big 3 Free” and still contain a bevy of petrochemicals, solvents and unsafe colorants. What are glycol ethers (butyl and ethyl acetates)? Solvents that have been shown to cause reproductive damage. Nitrocellulose? That's the main ingredient in dynamite and a highly flammable hazardous material. What are FD&C colors? Cancer causing colorants shown to increase hyperactivity in lab rats. Lake and coal tars? Petrochemicals. Check other “safe” kids and adult nail polishes and see the results. It might surprise you to see what’s hiding in “safe” nail polishes.

Why Hopscotch Kids?

Hopscotch Kids is truly the safest nail polish for kids on the market. We have three ingredients. Three. Water, water-miscible acrylic polymer emulsion, and natural colorants. That’s it. While we are not “completely natural” - no nail polish is, we have made it our mission to be the safest and highest salon-quality product available. We are using the same formula for our adult line, SCOTCH Naturals, using amazing natural colorants that make our polish truly safe and “Eco-Chic”.

What do you mean “Salon-Quality?”

Hopscotch Kids is the only water based nail polish on the market that has such vibrant, rich colors that dry in 3 minutes to a high gloss. With the proper preparation of little nails, our colors will look and last like traditional nail polishes. There is no need for a basecoat or topcoat, so professional looking nails are quick and easy to achieve - which makes the manicure and pedicure process fun for Mom and kids.

But it is more expensive than other “kids” nail polishes.

You’re right. We are a little more expensive than other kids “non-toxic” nail polishes. That’s because we have such a high quality, truly safe, non-toxic product. Our polishes are designed to last with just two coats of polish, eliminating the need to purchase separate topcoat and basecoat (saving you money and time). Our bottles of polish contain cutting edge technology providing ease of use and a longer shelf life than other “water-based” polishes. Every aspect of Hopscotch Kids, from our lead-free Italian glass bottles, to our specially designed kid-sized brushes makes us a superior product. We named each of our colors after playground and nursery school games in order to celebrate the innocence of childhood. Your kids deserve the best, and we have made it our mission to keep kids innocent and playful for as long as possible. Our two coat colors will last for weeks, but the memories created by using our products will last a lifetime.

Do You Know the Truth About Cosmetics?

Thank you Annie Leonard for getting the TRUTH out there. We are so frustrated that many nail polish companies are touting themselves as being toxic-free just because they took out the 3 bigger toxins out of their products. BUT they are still full of industrial grade solvents and chemicals.

Hopscotch Kids is TRULY non-toxic - we are water-based and use natural colorants.

EcoStiletto - The Ultimate Guide to All Things Chic and Eco

School may be out for summer, but if you want to be in the eco-know we have a site you'll want to add to your summer reading list. A big THANK YOU to EcoStiletto for recommending Hopscotch Kids WaterColors nail polish in their enlightening piece on the hidden hazards of nail polish!

Most of the major polish brands are going “big three free,” meaning they’ve taken the most well known toxic ingredients—formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate(DBP)—out of their formulas. But some still contain chemical solvents, typically acetate derivatives (that’s the stuff that makes it stinky). And some have gotten flak for “hidden” ingredients like formaldehyde resin, which may not be listed on

The article starts off listing some of the bigger chemical offenders and then some lesser, let's say misdemeanor, options. And finally you get to the water-based category where you'll find us:

The Hopscotch Kids WaterColors line is designed for rugrats, but moms-in-the-know grab it first. Hopscotch founder and mother of four Ginny Cardenas says that when you first use water-based polish, you may notice that it peels and chips because the polish is drawing away the solvents that your old polish left behind, but after a few treatments with water-based polish, you’ll never know the difference. We’re not sure on the science, but our pretty polish stayed on and we’re counting the days until Scotch Naturals for adults launches next month.

We love that they saved the best--and safest--for last! Read the full article on EcoStiletto and be sure sign up for the newsletter and enter to enter to win a Hopscotch Kids WaterColors Twin Pack.

Lovely Little Ladybugs

Now that we have some new colors in our lineup (and a great new formulation!) we're really starting to play around with fun and simple paint techniques that are so quick to do, even our busy girls volunteer to be testers. The ladybug is so simple, and adorable on little toes for summer:

You will need
Soap and water
Hopscotch Kids WaterColors nail polish in Red Rover Red Rover
Hopscotch Kids WaterColors nail polish in Miss Mary Mack
A toothpick (or small paperclip bent straight)
A rag or moist paper towel to wipe the toothpick if needed

1. Make sure hands are super clean to start.
2. Buff nails to remove surface oils, then rinse and dry well.
3. Apply 1-2 thin coats of Red Rover Red Rover.
4. Carefully remove brush from Miss Mary Mack and set aside.
5. Dip the toothpick into the polish and gently apply little black dots.

Keep your squirmer occupied for 3-5 minutes and then let your little buggies fly.

Happy Flag Day!

In honor of Flag Day--and as our own prep for the coming 4th of July holiday--we found a fantastic project for you and the kiddos, courtesy of Skip to My Lou. I never do anything quite put-together enough for the centerpiece, though I might have to this year because it is so adorable! However, we do love to make home made pinwheels and Skip to My Lou provides pdf instructions for three different sizes. They are fun and festive and you can use them in all sizes to decorate your backyard or beach BBQ. Or you can make little 4 or 6 inch versions as cake or pie decor. And of course they are an ideal, safe alternative to sparklers for your tiny tots.

Once you clean up the project mess, gather your girls and your Hopscotch Kids WaterColors. Our Ink a Bink a Bottle of Ink and Red Rover Red Rover will give your fingers and toes a little patriotic flair. Paint nails one color and toes the other, or alternate one red, one blue. If you're feeling really creative you could do red nails with blue dots (or stripes) or vice versa... the possibilites are endless!
Be sure to order the Twin Pack and we'll include a free buffer.

Hopscotch Kids Adventures in Malibu!

We met so many wonderful people at the EcoBabyWorld/Red Cross Event. We had a great time! The Bel-Air Bay Club and it's staff were amazing. The views were stunning. And all the vendors and people we met were fantastic. Really awesome eco-friendly products hitting the market. Can't wait to take another trip to Santa Monica and Malibu.

One of the perks to going to these fun events is trading product with the other vendors and coming home with the coolest goodies for our kiddos. Click here to see a quick video of Mary sporting her Moo Moo Moosica shirt, Organic Baby Couture yoga pants and zo-li's On-The-Go snack dispenser which Mary quickly filled with all her favorite snacks. And anyone who knows Mary knows she luvvvvvvvs her snacks. We think she has a hollow leg.

Organic Baby Couture
Yoga Pants are Oh soooooo soft!

zo-li has so many cool products

Luvin' Paper Culture's modern designs

Cutest piggies ever!

Big Fat Hen's sleep sacks were so beautiful, soft and looked so comfy and cozy. So wish they were around when my kiddos were babies.

From the makers of Epicuren Baby comes Episencial, an organic line of skin care products at a great price. I love the feel of their sunscreen, so easy and quick to put on our kids - definitely not sticky.

Jana from Beltz4Kids was so sweet. She uses vegetables to "tan" her leather - cool!

The name of this product says it all Booby Trapper AND it really is a great design. Again, another one of those items I wish I had when the kids were babies.

Sooooo soft and not too bulky! I really loved using bumgenius with Mary but if I knew EcoBumz was available I would have bought them instead.

These are just plain COOOOOOL!

And, of course - we were there representing the Hopscotch Kids WaterColors line and gave a sneak peak of our adult line, Scotch Naturals.

Goin' Green for Easter... or How to Dye Eggs With Spinach Juice

It is only natural that our complete aversion to all things toxic extends to easter egg dye. Here you have what should be a fun and engaging project for your children, but YIKES, commercial egg dyes are riddled with things we really don't want our kids messing with, much less ingesting. If you have a budding cook or chemist in the house, going natural with your egg dyeing project is a fun way to get them experimenting with color and saturation. And if you are among the many who say, "Is this really necessary? Are we being paranoid?" Well, I say if you find healthier alternative, something that you know for sure is safe, then why wouldn't you give it a shot?

By using plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs, not only do you know exactly what you’re getting (hold the bugs, thanks) but the colors are far lovelier than their synthetic counterparts. They are muted yet vibrant, and knowing their source is gratifying on a deeper aesthetic level. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in exploration—kids get to experiment with which plant materials work in which way, and can get creative with items in the refrigerator or pantry. Happy St. Mary's Day!

Our youngest finally knows her name so much fan fare for the past two days have been centered on Mary, Mary, Mary. So you can imagine her confusion when we started talking about this Patty girl. "No, Patty. I Mary," she would say as she pointed to herself. Many attempts to get her to understand and we just weren't making any headway. So when I said "you mean Happy St. Mary's Day!" She responded with an enthusiastic "YES!" Happy St. Mary's Day!
