Goin' Green for Easter... or How to Dye Eggs With Spinach Juice



It is only natural that our complete aversion to all things toxic extends to easter egg dye. Here you have what should be a fun and engaging project for your children, but YIKES, commercial egg dyes are riddled with things we really don't want our kids messing with, much less ingesting. If you have a budding cook or chemist in the house, going natural with your egg dyeing project is a fun way to get them experimenting with color and saturation. And if you are among the many who say, "Is this really necessary? Are we being paranoid?" Well, I say if you find healthier alternative, something that you know for sure is safe, then why wouldn't you give it a shot?

By using plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs, not only do you know exactly what you’re getting (hold the bugs, thanks) but the colors are far lovelier than their synthetic counterparts. They are muted yet vibrant, and knowing their source is gratifying on a deeper aesthetic level. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in exploration—kids get to experiment with which plant materials work in which way, and can get creative with items in the refrigerator or pantry.
