Munchkins and Goblins and Witches – Oh My!

You can green your Halloween.
It’s Halloween time again, and while we want to enjoy all the spooktacular aspects of the season, we believe it’s possible to have all the scary fun you want safely. Where costumes are concerned, there are loads of eco friendly options. Swapping costumes with other families or altering existing costumes means less waste and gives kids the chance to create their own one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Of course, no costume is complete without the finishing touches of the perfect Halloween manicure. What a trip...literally. As we walked out of the enormous Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan this afternoon, after a sales training with our amazing and revered North American rep Karen Alweil for the New York International Gift Fair, we realized that one very short year ago, at this very moment we were cleaning up after our first launch party.

What a difference a year makes.

In the last year, and really in the last few short months, our little Hopscotch Kids line has come into it's own. We are so lucky to have such a great team of professionals working with us that share our passion and love of our product. It's amazing, the growing momentum that is taking place. While in New York, we have had some incredible meetings with huge national publications and online blogs. Everyone we talk to and everyone who tries our product is literally blown away by the technology and playfulness of our line. It has left us with no doubt that we have created a major buzz about Hopscotch Kids and we will be a household name in no time.

We know, for a fact, that none of this would be possible without the support and love we have been showered with from our families, friends and fans. We have worked our tails off to get to where we are, and we know that from here, the hard work really begins. We want to let you know that as always, we are dedicated to providing you the safest salon quality nail polishes for your little ones. At $12.99 a bottle, they’re more than the brand I normally reach for at $8.99, but in the end, what’s $4 extra when the bottle is going to last me over a year and I don’t have to inhale noxious fumes to have nails this pretty for my date with hubby tonight!

The case for non-toxic nails….but, what does it all mean?

As most of you know, or have heard, or read about recently there is increasing concern over the toxicity of our cosmetics in this country. A landmark bill was introduced in Congress last week dealing with this very issue. As a whole, the FDA is very lax about what chemicals are allowed in our beauty products. Chemicals that have been known to cause all types of cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities, reproductive issues and more.

Nail Polish – Traditional vs. “Big 3 Free”

Traditional nail polishes are one of the most toxic cosmetic products you can buy, and most people are not even aware that these toxins are absorbed as quickly into your nail bed as they are into your skin. Not to mention the toxins your are breathing into your lungs. Traditional nail polishes include nasty ingredients like Formaldehyde, Toluene and Dibutyl Phthalate otherwise known as “The Big Three”. Removers and hardeners associated with acrylic nails and shellac treatments contain an even longer, harder to pronounce list of damaging ingredients.

Cancer causing colorants shown to increase hyperactivity in lab rats. Lake and coal tars? Petrochemicals. Check other “safe” kids and adult nail polishes and see the results. It might surprise you to see what’s hiding in “safe” nail polishes.

Most of the major polish brands are going “big three free,” meaning they’ve taken the most well known toxic ingredients—formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate(DBP)—out of their formulas. But some still contain chemical solvents, typically acetate derivatives (that’s the stuff that makes it stinky). And some have gotten flak for “hidden” ingredients like formaldehyde resin, which may not be listed on
labels.

Now that we have some new colors in our lineup (and a great new formulation!) we're really starting to play around with fun and simple paint techniques that are so quick to do, even our busy girls volunteer to be testers. The ladybug is so simple, and adorable on little toes for summer:

You will need

Soap and water

Buffer

Hopscotch Kids WaterColors nail polish in Red Rover Red Rover

Hopscotch Kids WaterColors nail polish in Miss Mary Mack

A toothpick (or small paperclip bent straight)

A rag or moist paper towel to wipe the toothpick if needed

1. Make sure hands are super clean to start.

2. Buff nails to remove surface oils, then rinse and dry well.

3. Apply 1-2 thin coats of Red Rover Red Rover.

4. Carefully remove brush from Miss Mary Mack and set aside.

5. Dip the toothpick into the polish and gently apply little black dots.

Keep your squirmer occupied for 3-5 minutes and then let your little buggies fly.

In honor of Flag Day--and as our own prep for the coming 4th of July holiday--we found a fantastic project for you and the kiddos, courtesy of Skip to My Lou. I never do anything quite put-together enough for the centerpiece, though I might have to this year because it is so adorable! However, we do love to make home made pinwheels and Skip to My Lou provides pdf instructions for three different sizes. They are fun and festive and you can use them in all sizes to decorate your backyard or beach BBQ. Or you can make little 4 or 6 inch versions as cake or pie decor. And of course they are an ideal, safe alternative to sparklers for your tiny tots.

Once you clean up the project mess, gather your girls and your Hopscotch Kids WaterColors. Color Me Safe - Home Made Play Dough

We are all about color... Obviously! But more and more we are trepedatious about the safety of the products our kids love, namely play dough and paint. Thanks to eco ike we've just come across this fantastic recipe for homemade play dough. Be sure to check out the link below for all natural (vegetable) food coloring.

1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup salt
1 Tablespoon oil (any type)
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
1 Tablespoon peppermint extract (or cinnamon or vanilla)
1+ Tablespoon natural food coloring

(1.) In a pot, mix dry ingredients then stir in the wet ingredients while the burner is on medium heat.
(2.) Once it thickens a little, lower the heat and keep mixing until it looks almost solid and there are no gooey parts.
(3.) Dump out, let cool and wedge.
(4.) Keep in a glass or bpa-free airtight container.

We met so many wonderful people at the EcoBabyWorld/Red Cross Event. We had a great time! The Bel-Air Bay Club and it's staff were amazing. The views were stunning. And all the vendors and people we met were fantastic. Really awesome eco-friendly products hitting the market. Can't wait to take another trip to Santa Monica and Malibu.

One of the perks to going to these fun events is trading product with the other vendors and coming home with the coolest goodies for our kiddos. And anyone who knows Mary knows she luvvvvvvvs her snacks. We think she has a hollow leg.

Big Fat Hen's sleep sacks were so beautiful, soft and looked so comfy and cozy. So wish they were around when my kiddos were babies.

From the makers of Epicuren Baby comes Episencial, an organic line of skin care products at a great price. I love the feel of their sunscreen, so easy and quick to put on our kids - definitely not sticky.

Jana from Beltz4Kids was so sweet. She uses vegetables to "tan" her leather - cool!

The name of this product says it all Booby Trapper AND it really is a great design. Again, another one of those items I wish I had when the kids were babies.

Sooooo soft and not too bulky! I really loved using bumgenius with Mary but if I knew EcoBumz was available I would have bought them instead.

Goin' Green for Easter... or How to Dye Eggs With Spinach Juice

It is only natural that our complete aversion to all things toxic extends to easter egg dye. Here you have what should be a fun and engaging project for your children, but YIKES, commercial egg dyes are riddled with things we really don't want our kids messing with, much less ingesting. If you have a budding cook or chemist in the house, going natural with your egg dyeing project is a fun way to get them experimenting with color and saturation. And if you are among the many who say, "Is this really necessary? Are we being paranoid?" Well, I say if you find healthier alternative, something that you know for sure is safe, then why wouldn't you give it a shot?

By using plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs, not only do you know exactly what you’re getting (hold the bugs, thanks) but the colors are far lovelier than their synthetic counterparts. They are muted yet vibrant, and knowing their source is gratifying on a deeper aesthetic level. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in exploration—kids get to experiment with which plant materials work in which way, and can get creative with items in the refrigerator or pantry. Our youngest finally knows her name so much fan fare for the past two days have been centered on Mary, Mary, Mary. So you can imagine her confusion when we started talking about this Patty girl. "No, Patty. I Mary," she would say as she pointed to herself. Many attempts to get her to understand and we just weren't making any headway. So when I said "you mean Happy St. Mary's Day!" She responded with an enthusiastic "YES!" Happy St. Mary's Day!

Kid-centric, “Water Colors” Nail Polish Showcasing at GBK’s Oscar Gift Suite

March 4, 2010 (Phoenix, AZ) – Hopscotch Kids™ has announced the launch of its Hopscotch Kids Water Colors™ line of natural nail polishes for girls by showcasing the line at GBK Production’s Oscar Luxury Gifting Suite.

The company was founded because youth cosmetics companies have not adapted to the growing trend towards natural cosmetics. Nor have natural cosmetics companies effectively provided products that speak directly to the kids market.

The Water Colors collection boasts an array of fun, “kid-approved” colors including: Ink a Bink, Miss Mary Mack, and Eenee Meenee Minee Moe. Water Colors is completely water based with no formaldehyde, phthalates, toluene or other petrochemical solvents (none of the toxic chemicals found in most nail polishes). The primary ingredients are water, water-miscible acrylic polymer emulsion, and non-toxic colorants (no fd&c).

"If you look at most of the nail polishes for kids out there, you’ll find that they have a lot of harsh industrial chemicals in them, despite how they’re marketed," said Ginny Cardenas, founder and CEO of Lila Cosmetics, Hopscotch Kids’ parent company. “Which is why I started Hopscotch Kids, they are water-based and are as fun as they are safe.”

I particularly liked this recommendation: Buy a real tree.

(Quick shout out to my Auntie Ann and Uncle Art who own Hester Creek Farms in Los Gatos, CA. They have owned and worked their Christmas tree farm since before I was born. If you live in the area surprise your family with a fun drive up to the farm and pick out a beautiful tree. And make sure to say "Hi" to them from me. )

Artificial trees are made from PVC, which is very hard to recycle and off-gases carcinogenic chemicals. Cutting down a tree for decoration may not seem earth friendly, but consider that well-managed tree farms are set up just for this purpose. For every tree harvested, 2 to 3 are planted in its place, and purchasing from a local tree farm helps support your local economy. To find eco-friendly tree farmers near you, check LocalHarvest or GreenPromise. What a fun experience! Lisa and I had an amazing opportunity to showcase Hopscotch Kids Water Colors nail polish to the Arizona market. Lisa was absolutely adorable and the host Lisa Haffner, co-host Gayle Bass and the entire crew at KTVK TV3's "Your Life A to Z" were so nice to us. We couldn't have been too bad on air - they invited us to come back when we add more products to the Hopscotch Kids line. Where's Abby you ask...well she didn't want to miss out on her field trip to the World Wild Life Zoo! Can you blame her?!
